Minecraft Halloween build ideas: 18 spooky builds to make
Eighteen spooky Minecraft Halloween builds: a haunted house, a witch tower, a giant pumpkin house, a graveyard, a skeleton dragon and more, with blocks and steps.

Halloween is the best excuse of the year to build something spooky in Minecraft. A crooked witch's cottage at the edge of the village, a haunted house on the hill or a pumpkin patch glowing with jack o'lanterns changes the whole mood of a world, and the game already has everything you need: dark stone and wood, pumpkins, lanterns, iron bars and dead bushes.
Here are all eighteen Halloween builds in the X-Builds catalogue, from an easy little graveyard to a giant spider boss. Each is an original design with a full guide: the exact blocks it needs, counted from the build itself, and a picture for every step with the new blocks outlined. The size, block count and rough build time under each one come straight from its guide.
Every picture of these builds is taken on a moonlit Halloween night, so you can see how the windows, lanterns and jack o'lanterns glow before you start. The blocks are the same ones you would use in daylight.
Haunted houses and a chapel
A haunted house is the classic Halloween build. The trick is dark materials with a few warm lights: deepslate and dark oak for the walls and roof, and orange glowing windows that make the darkness around them feel deeper.
A dark gothic two-storey house with steep pointed gables: a tuff brick and stone ground floor between dark oak posts, dark oak upper walls, deepslate tile roofs with pinnacles and chimneys, and a spruce porch with a balcony across the front. Its windows glow orange, some behind iron bars, and the yard has a lantern-lit stone fence, pumpkin patches and bare dead trees.
Light only about half the windows. A house where every window glows looks cosy; a house where some stay dark looks haunted.
A big symmetrical gothic mansion with a three-storey middle, two wings, square corner towers with tall spires and a slim central tower rising highest of all. Dark deepslate brick walls are banded with light stone bricks, and behind one big window a library is lit by a lantern chandelier. The largest Halloween build here, for a long project.
A small gothic stone chapel with a bell tower and spire, tall red stained glass windows glowing in the dark, and stepped buttresses down a nave of worn, cracked and mossy stone bricks. Rows of gravestones, crosses and mossy tombs fill the graveyard around it.
Purple is the witch's colour. Purple wool, concrete and terracotta make crooked hat-shaped roofs, purpur and amethyst give them sparkle, and a cauldron of green brew finishes the scene.
A tall stone and tuff brick tower with glowing windows, a spruce balcony and a jettied top room under a crooked purple witch's hat that leans as it rises, with a lantern hanging from its hooked tip. A purple-roofed side room with amethyst crystals stands at its foot.
A crooked little cottage of spruce and dark oak on an uneven cobblestone foundation, with a sagging purple roof that curls up at the front like a witch's hat, a crooked chimney with a green glow, a fenced pumpkin patch and a dead tree hung with lanterns.
A great first Halloween build: small, quick and full of character.
A witch's hut of dark oak logs under a steep stepped purple roof, beside a giant bubbling cauldron of green brew over a ring of fire, with a plume of green glass steam rising out of it.
A giant black cauldron on four stubby legs, full of bubbling green potion with a twisting column of green smoke. A purple portal swirls in its front inside an obsidian frame, under two knobbly arches hung with lanterns and soul lanterns.
Pumpkin builds are bright and cheerful rather than scary, which makes them perfect for a village or a spawn area. Orange concrete gives the smooth skin and orange terracotta the darker grooves between the ribs.
A house that is one giant ribbed pumpkin, carved at the front into a glowing jack o'lantern face. A spruce double door sits under a gabled porch, lit windows peek out of both sides, and a curly green stem sits on top.
A fairy-tale coach with a giant pumpkin for a body, glowing yellow windows, spruce doors and four big spoked wheels with jack o'lantern hubs, on a short cobblestone road with lantern posts.
A jack o'lantern hot air balloon moored over a spruce launch deck: a carved, glowing pumpkin envelope, chains down to a basket with a burner, and lanterns hanging all around.
It is tall rather than wide, so it fits in a small space and can be seen glowing from a long way off.
A tall scarecrow on a spruce cross in a little wheat field, with a big glowing pumpkin head under a witch's hat, a ragged patched coat stuffed with hay, and lanterns hanging from its sleeves.
Put it in the middle of a real wheat farm: the farmland rows are part of the build.
A small walled graveyard with a tall gothic gate, gravestones on their plots, lantern posts and a little deepslate crypt glowing blue from a soul lantern. The smallest Halloween build here, and a good one to start with.
A huge gnarled dead tree with a scary face and a glowing doorway in its trunk, a small orange-lit room inside, and bare crooked branches hung with lanterns on chains.
It makes a brilliant secret entrance: dig down from the room inside and put your base underneath.
A spooky mine entrance cut into a rocky cliff studded with ore: a timber-framed tunnel mouth, rails running out over a ledge and down a spruce trestle to an ore cart, and TNT, jack o'lanterns and redstone torches along the way.
A wrecked pirate galleon run aground on a dark reef, its hull broken open to show a lantern-lit hold, a snapped foremast, tattered red sails and a black skull flag. It sits right on the sea.
The bare bones of a dragon prowling over a dark rocky outcrop: a big skull with a glowing mouth, a spine of spiked vertebrae, ribs lit from inside by hanging lanterns and two raised wing frames. The bones are white concrete, calcite and quartz.
There is no bone block in the list on purpose: white concrete, calcite and quartz give the bones more shading than one block could.
A headless rider in dark armour on a bone-white skeleton horse, holding a flaming sword in one hand and a glowing carved pumpkin head in the other, on a stone brick plinth with lanterns and jack o'lanterns.
A giant black spider crouched over its lair: eight jointed legs, a huge abdomen with a red hourglass, glowing eyes and white fangs, on a round floor inlaid with a red web and hung with silk-wrapped prey.
Dark grey deepslate and dark oak with lighter tuff and stone bricks between them, so the shape still reads at night, then warm light behind orange glass and iron bars over some of the windows.
Orange concrete for the skin, orange terracotta for the grooves, moss and green concrete for the stem, and shroomlight behind yellow glass for a carved face that glows.
Tips for Halloween builds
Carve your own pumpkins. Use shears on a pumpkin to carve a face, then craft the carved pumpkin with a torch to make a jack o'lantern that glows.
Make windows glow. Put a light block like a shroomlight or a lantern just behind orange or yellow stained glass. Plain glass with a torch behind it looks much weaker.
Keep some contrast. Black next to dark grey disappears at night. Break up dark walls with a lighter stone like stone bricks or tuff bricks, and keep the darkest blocks for roofs.
Use soul lanterns for a cold glow. A soul lantern gives a dim blue light that feels much spookier than a normal lantern. Craft a soul torch with soul sand or soul soil, then ring it with iron nuggets.
Light it so mobs stay out. Hostile mobs spawn in complete darkness, so put lights inside every room, even in a haunted house.
Dress the ground. Podzol, coarse dirt, dead bushes and a few pumpkins around a build make a plain grass yard look overgrown and forgotten.
